Servet V 2021 launches: A weekend to democratise access to space with #citizenscience

Participants will meet at Etopia on Friday 29 October  to finalise preparations

On Saturday 30 the launches will take place from a town yet to be determined

On Sunday 31 an open session will be held to take stock of the day

Next weekend, 29 to 31 October 2021, the #ServetV project will live its most eagerly awaited moment: the launch of the 3 balloons that will rise to more than 30,000 metres in altitude. They will be equipped with the capsules designed by the participants and will make it possible to take data during their ascent to the stratosphere. It will also serve to carry out scientific experiments.

Goal: reach the stratosphere

#ServetV is a citizen science project to democratise access to space. It is a community of enthusiasts of astronautics, space navigation and anything above 12,000 metres above sea level. Over the last few weeks they have proposed, designed and built their capsules and experiments, which will be launched on the balloons until they reach the stratosphere.

During this journey, each capsule will collect the data it was designed for (temperature, humidity, ultraviolet radiation…) and transmit it using LoRa-TTN technology. In addition, the balloons are equipped with tracking and video-recording devices that will make it possible to know the route each balloon takes and its position on returning to Earth, once it bursts and its components fall back down.

Activities throughout the weekend

Next Friday 29, an afternoon session will be held at the fabrication lab of Etopia Centre for Art and Technology (Zaragoza), in which participants will finalise the design of the capsules and the distribution of the capsules on the balloons.

Then on Saturday 30 in the morning the launches will take place in a town near Zaragoza, which has not yet been determined. The project organisers will announce the name of the chosen town 48 hours before the launches, once the weather conditions for the 30th are known. The name of the town will be announced through the social media profiles of the Ibercivis Foundation and on the hashtag #ServetV.

Sunday 31 will be the final session of the project, again at Etopia, where everything that happened on Saturday will be reviewed and the results obtained by the capsules will be analysed. The session will be open to anyone who wants to learn about the results obtained, as well as all the challenges faced during the balloons’ ascent.

How can you watch the launches?

Anyone interested in watching the launches on Saturday 30 can come to the chosen site, which will be announced two days before the launches. There they can learn about the details and preparations, chat with those responsible for the capsules and follow the balloons’ path until they re-enter the Earth from the stratosphere.
