IES Peñamayor in Nava

Our project will study the propagation of sound in different layers of the atmosphere through several experiments. Some studies suggest that near the tropopause sound propagates in a similar way to how it does in the underwater SOFAR channel, discovered in 1940. At a depth of about 750 m, infrasound is able to travel hundreds of km without attenuation, propagating at a minimum speed.

Could there be a similar layer in the atmosphere? To find out, we will measure the speed of sound at different heights and try to detect the presence of sound sources, such as aircraft flying at that altitude.

The results will be the first of their kind obtained in European airspace. We will be in contact with the “Sandia National Laboratories” (Albuquerque, USA), where a team is studying the existence of this layer. Finally, we will study the qualities of sound by playing the anthem of Asturias, “Asturias, patria querida”, in the stratosphere.
