The #SERVETVI projects: "Resistance of Artemia salina cysts exposed to stratospheric conditions" by Colegio Nuryana

Colegio Nuryana, in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, presents the scientific project «Resistance of Artemia salina cysts exposed to stratospheric conditions», with which they will take part in the #ServetVI launches in spring 2022.

Artemia salina is a tiny crustacean that lives in inland brackish lakes and lagoons. When environmental conditions are adverse, Artemia eggs become cysts, and the embryo enters cryptobiosis. In this state, metabolic processes are suspended, allowing them to withstand extreme environmental conditions.

The aim of the study is to assess how extreme variations in temperature, humidity, pressure and UV radiation affect the survival of Artemia salina cysts.

Our probe will record the different parameters as it rises through the atmosphere. In addition, a capsule with Artemia salina eggs will be carried on the outside.

Finally we will recover the probe, analyse the recorded data and study the viability of this crustacean’s cysts.
