The #SERVETVI projects: Colegio Juan de Lanuza. Zaragoza, a peculiar city?

Colegio Juan de Lanuza, in Zaragoza, presents the scientific project “Zaragoza, a peculiar city?”, with which they will take part in the #ServetVI launches in spring 2022.

We are particularly interested in becoming aware of the air pollution in our city today and, if possible, in having a contrasting view with data from previous years to measure how it has evolved and try to infer trends. In the same way, using our data and looking at the data published in La Palma, we would like to observe the differences between two different environmental situations and to see how this affects air quality.

Solution adopted

To try to answer our research questions, we are going to design a prototype able to measure the following values with the following components:

  • Arduino board to which all the components detailed below are connected
  • suspended particle sensor: to measure air pollution
  • accelerometer: to monitor the speed at which our device will rise… and then fall
  • pressure sensor: to measure altitude and associate the values collected with a specific height
  • temperature and humidity sensor: a secondary measurement; since we are going to collect values related to height, we will take advantage of it to take these values too, so we can analyse the data obtained in class afterwards and learn about them from our own experience
  • GPS to associate values with a specific geographical position; all these values will be collected on an SD card for later analysis and review
  • we leave open the possibility, if we have time left, of transmitting data in real time to a receiving station for as long as height and distance allow
  • all of it will be powered by a LiPo-type battery
  • we will design and make a PCB to mount all the components directly and avoid annoying wiring
  • design of the casing and 3D printing of it.

The project team has a website and a Twitter account where they will be posting updates on the progress of their experiment.
