Institut Giola de Llinars del Vallès, in Barcelona, presents the scientific project with which they will take part in the #ServetVI launches in spring 2022.
It is known that many astronauts have skin problems: excessive dryness, infections, eczema and even skin cancer, in a much higher proportion than the population living under more usual conditions, possibly because of the high exposure to high-energy radiation.
At Institut Giola, the 1st-year ESO students are working on making creams, ointments, aerosols or solid tablets from natural ingredients, created to protect our astronauts and their battered skin.
But the study would be incomplete if we do not know how those protective elements will react to extreme conditions. That is why some teachers, together with their 2nd-year ESO students, thanks to SERVET VI, are going to send different samples to the stratosphere so that we can then observe the physical-chemical changes that have occurred”.
