A new edition of the citizen science project that brings space closer to schoolchildren is on its way.
The I3A of the University of Zaragoza and the Ibercivis Foundation, in collaboration with
FECYT-Ministry of Science and Innovation, announce the tenth edition of the
Servet project, #ServetX, for schools and school associations.
#ServetX offers schools, groups and after-school clubs the
opportunity to take part in designing and building capsules that will be launched to the stratosphere on sounding balloons. No specialist knowledge is required, only scientific interest. The organisation takes care of the logistics and the complexity of the balloon, so participants can focus on the science and on their stratospheric experiment.
Servet is a citizen science project that carries out near-space experiments. These experiments are launched on sounding balloons to the stratosphere, at more than 30,000 metres in altitude, and are designed by citizens, associations or individuals. Participants are responsible for setting and carrying out their own scientific challenge.
In #ServetX a total of 10 scientific experiments will be launched, mentored throughout the school year. The launch is planned for mid-April 2024 (subject to favourable weather conditions) near Zaragoza.
Key dates:
- Until 11 October: Registration by filling in the form with the details and
mission report. You can read the rules of the project here. - 23 October: Announcement of accepted proposals.
- From November 2023 to April 2024: Carrying out the project, online seminars, writing the report, progress monitoring.
- Launch!: mid-April (date to be confirmed)
Through the Servet project, participants have the opportunity to experience every stage of a scientific stratospheric project, from choosing the mission objectives to designing the probe, integrating components, testing the system, preparing the launch and analysing the data obtained. All the information about the call can be found on the project website.
Servet is a project of the University of Zaragoza through the Aragon Engineering Research Institute (I3A) and the Ibercivis Foundation. It also has the support of Etopia Centre for Art and Technology, the CESAR Laboratories at Etopia and the Spanish Radio Amateurs Union, and is partly funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology – Ministry of Science and Innovation.
