Citizen Science heading for the stratosphere: Servet-V chooses Almudévar (Huesca) for its launches on 6 November

'Despierta Aragón' on Aragón Radio interviews Enrique Torres about Servet-V

The #ServetV citizen science project will come to the town of Almudévar, in Huesca, for its most eagerly awaited moment: the launch of the 2 sounding balloons that will rise to more than 30,000 metres in altitude. The balloons are fitted with capsules designed and built by citizen scientists, which will make it possible to take data during their ascent to the stratosphere and to carry out various scientific experiments. The launches will take place in the area around the Almudévar Municipal Sports Hall.

Launch site: Almudévar Municipal Sports Hall (Av. Deportes, 21, 22270 Almudévar, Huesca).

Opening time for the public: 09:30.

Scheduled launch time: 11:00

Citizen Science heading for the stratosphere: Servet-V chooses Almudévar (Huesca) for its launches on 6 November

#ServetV is a citizen science project to democratise access to space, involving a whole community of enthusiasts of astronautics, space navigation and anything that moves above 12,000 metres above sea level. Over the last few weeks they have proposed, designed and built their capsules and experiments, which will be launched on the balloons until they reach the stratosphere.

During this journey, each capsule will collect data (temperature, humidity, ultraviolet radiation, etc.), transmitting it using LoRa-TTN technology. In addition, the balloons are equipped with tracking and video-recording devices that will make it possible to know the route each balloon takes and its position on returning to Earth, once it bursts and its components fall back down.

Activities throughout the weekend

This Friday 5 November, from 17:30, an afternoon session will be held at the fabrication lab of Etopia Centre for Art and Technology (Zaragoza), in which participants will finalise the design of the capsules and the distribution of the capsules on the balloons.

On Sunday 7, from 10:30, the final session of the project will be held, again at Etopia, where everything that happened on Saturday will be reviewed and the results obtained by the capsules will be analysed. The session will be open to the public and registration is required through Eventbrite.

How can you watch the launches?

Anyone interested in watching the launches on Saturday 6 can come to Almudévar, where they can learn about the details and preparations, chat with those responsible for the capsules and follow the balloons’ path until they re-enter the Earth from the stratosphere. Servet has the support of the Ibercivis Foundation, the University of Zaragoza,  Etopia Centre for Art and Technology, the CESAR Laboratories at Etopia, Almudévar Town Council and the Spanish Radio Amateurs Union, and is funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology – Ministry of Science and Innovation.
