In this video the team of students from Colegio Internacional de Granada, in Granada, tell us about the progress of their scientific project, which will be launched to the stratosphere as part of the classroom citizen science project #SERVETVIII
Their experiment: “Stratosphere mission: colour and life”
With our experiments we aim to analyse the colour of the sky and study the changes as the probe rises through the troposphere and the stratosphere. The experimental design includes a camera that will periodically take photographs at different heights as the probe ascends, for later analysis. The study will be interesting for raising awareness of the fragility of our planet’s atmosphere (half of the atmospheric mass is in the first 5,500 m) and how it shows in the colour of the sky. We will also study how the cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis (spirulina) behaves on a trip to the stratosphere and whether it would survive a trip to Mars. The cultures will undergo viability tests to check the survival of the cyanobacteria under these conditions. We will learn basic microbiology techniques and about the importance these bacteria had in the development of life on planet Earth.
