The #SERVETX experiments: IES Valle del Huecha (Mallén, Zaragoza)

IES Valle de Huecha, in Mallén, tell us about their experiment for #SERVETX:

The project will be worked on jointly in the subjects of Technology and Digitalisation and of Physics and Chemistry, giving the work a multidisciplinary STEAM approach.

Our project team will be made up of the students of each of the school’s two 3rd-year ESO classes, who will work in different sub-groups.
Within the framework of the project method and the scientific method, we want to design and build a space capsule that lets us measure, through various sensors, the temperature, ozone concentration and ultraviolet radiation during the journey of the capsule and the balloon. The prototype will also include a camera able to record images of the balloon along its path.

The building and launch to the stratosphere of our capsule aims to answer the
following general objective:
– Establish the relationship between all the variables measured, observing how they change as altitude varies and, in turn, trying to establish correlations between them, taking into account the theory about the characteristics of the atmosphere.

Specifically, the objectives that arise from these measurements are the following:
– Check the thermal inversion that occurs in the passage from the troposphere to the stratosphere.
– Check the variation of ozone concentration and its influence on UV radiation in the different layers of the atmosphere, observing the effect of the ozone layer on UV radiation.

As a complementary objective we also aim to observe, for example, the variation in the balloon’s volume in relation to the changes in pressure and temperature it undergoes on that journey, through the images taken by the capsule’s camera.
To meet these objectives, the data obtained by our capsule will be analysed once it returns to the Earth’s surface. Finally, we will produce the scientific poster that will make it possible to share the results and conclusions of our work
